April 11, 2009: An annual event for Youth For Seva, "Volunteers Appreciation Day" was held at RV Teachers college, Jayanagar, on 11th April 2009. Youth for Seva had collaborated with Times of India Campaign "Teach India", last year to beget thousands of volunteers, who were trained and assigned to various teaching projects in Govt. Schools and Study centres in slums, all over Bangalore. In conclusion to the academic year of 2008-09, YFS held this meet for volunteers wherein their work was appreciated and certificates were distributed. The chief guest of the evening was Dr.S.K Maini, the founder of Maini group of companies that manufacture REVA car, who is well-known himself for his work in the field of social service.

-Bharath Youth for Seva’s novel initiative of offering fellowship has generated quite a bit of interest among students and professionals. The program currently has 13 individuals from varied backgrounds. A few are students who have recently graduated from college while others are professionals on a sabbatical from work or those planning to do higher studies. Their dedication and commitment has helped in implementing key YFS projects.

From the Coordinator’s desk The teaching activity at schools and slums will come to an end in March. It has been a very fulfilling experience for all the volunteers so far. Even though most of ‘Teach India’ volunteers got less than 3 months to work with schools this year, it was sufficient to gain a deeper understanding of how government schools work, the ground realities of slums and the potential of children there.

-Varun YFS has been successfully conducting programs and events at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology. Volunteers along with the Social Welfare Department have been helping the hospital’s administration, assisting patients and conducting various events. The volunteers strive to bring smiles to the patients’ faces, since smiles hold the power to brighten the darkest of the days.

-Ashok One of the things that YFS takes particular pride in, has been its role in trying to give quality education to children from the slums, by enlisting the help of ordinary citizens who take up the role of teachers. To achieve this, a lot of induction programs have been held all over Bangalore and the response to these events has been nothing short of overwhelming.

-Alka ‘Seva Vacation’ is a YFS program specifically aimed at encouraging college students to volunteer full-time during the vacations. Since the vacation time is limited, only short projects which can be completed within 20 days are taken under this program.

-Ashok Rakesh, a software engineer with TCS by profession had always wanted to do his bit for the society, but was not sure how he could do that. Thanks to the support system provided by YFS, Rakesh is volunteering at the St.Martha`s hospital working to create stroke awareness. Today both Rakesh and the patients of Martha’s have found their happiness. This is a sentiment that has been echoed by a lot of people and could be counted as the biggest success stories of YFS so far.
