Education in non formal way

It all started with Latha Rao volunteering for a free tuition center for a group of girls who are school dropouts by a headmistress at Ittamadu, Bengaluru. In 2009 when Latha Rao’s house was being constructed she observed that construction labourer’s kids were simply roaming around and when enquired she came to know that they were not going to schools. Latha Rao wanted to help those kids in education. With the support of Youth for Seva and Poorna Prajna layout association, she started non formal school for those kids.

The school has been running for 10 years. Kids were given maths, science and language lessons based on their age and were prepared to get into school for different classes. Many kids were missing education and becoming child labourers or supporting the younger siblings have been benefited from this school. So far 70 kids have been trained and admitted to government schools. Part time teacher has been appointed to teach the day classes in non-formal school. Mangala complements the day teaching with her evening tuition classes to students who have joined formal school.

Latha, Roopashree and Mangala are working together and have overcome several challenges in running this school. They have been able to bring light in the lives of these kids and successfully running the project.

In 2018, the Latha Rao and team formally enrolled into “Warriors of Change Fellowship” program and with the aim of expanding this project to other areas. They have been successful in starting one more school at Dorekere.
