YFS Hyderabad – Vidya Daan 2012

Children in rural Nizamabad posing with the school kits gifted by YFS

Vidya Daan scholarship scheme was launched by YFS Hyderabad in 2011-12. Idea was to reach out to the poorest of the poor in Andhra Pradesh, in partnership with like-minded NGOs. Overall 490 students were sponsored in the first year. Each student receives Rs 300 per month as scholarship. This is not given in cash to the child, it is disbursed through our partner NGOs who take complete care of the student which includes boarding, lodging and education of the child.

We have focussed on students belonging to the primitive tribal groups. These tribes are the most backward in our country and are struggling for survival.  They are in need of education the most.  We have chosen students from families whose annual family income does not exceed Rs 20,000.  In some cases it is as low as Rs 5,000. These students are the first generation to be educated in their families. Several YFS volunteers have personally met these students.

YFS has closely worked with Vanavasi Kalyan Parishad ( and Vidya Bharati (, organizations of nationwide reach and high reputation for collecting this information.
